3 ways to evolve your style

new year, new style

The New Year brings with it a new desire for change.

And it’s no different for your style!

Now, it’s a common misconception that, in order to change your style, you have to go to the extreme. As in, buy a completely new wardrobe and get rid of all your old pieces.

While this overhaul method can work, it actually doesn’t have to be so drastic. In fact, I think it’s much better to make small, progressive changes to your style.

why I don’t recommend a complete style overhaul

There’s a couple reasons for this.

The first reason I don’t recommend a complete overhaul is because it’s overwhelming. Especially if you’re just getting started with your style, making a complete 180 in it can potentially cause much more stress than excitement, and that’s the last thing we want! It’s way better to take things one step at a time, explore new styles slowly, and add new pieces to your wardrobe gradually.

The second reason I don’t recommend a complete overhaul of your wardrobe is that it can be a substantial upfront investment. Clothes can be expensive, especially ones that are high quality and environmentally friendly. Most people simply don’t have the funds available to purchase a completely new wardrobe all at once. Which also ties into my third point…

The third reason I don’t recommend an overhaul is that it’s not a sustainable option. I want to encourage you to limit the amount of new pieces you purchase each year, and completely redoing your wardrobe just doesn’t allow for this kind of consideration. Especially if you were to do this on a regular basis, the waste from the clothes you discard would be significant.

Small updates, big results

Instead of completely overhauling your wardrobe, you can evolve your wardrobe much more slowly!

And the best part is that by adding to wardrobe overtime, you don’t have to worry about any of the cons that I listed above!

So how can you evolve your wardrobe?

There are 3 main ways that I like to do this.

  1. rethink your wardrobe

You already have infinite style combinations in your wardrobe! We often will wear the same clothes in the same ways over and over again. So just try new, creative combinations or pairing pieces that you normally wouldn’t put together in an outfit. Not only is this a great way to wear your clothes in multiple ways, but it’s also fun to get so creative with your style! Try to let go of the pressure of perfection, and take a little extra time to play and experiment.

  2. Purchase with intention

I recommend having a plan for your purchases. When you know what you want your style to be and where you’d like it to go, then you can much more easily purchase pieces with intention. The best way to do this is to create a style vision board! I have a free workshop about that here. Once you have a vision board, then you can create the overall plan for what you’d like to purchase next make your dream style a reality, rather than buying clothes with no strategy. And wasting money.

  3. Add vintage statement pieces throughout the year

My favorite way to add some flair to your style is to incorporate one of a kind vintage pieces. Whether it’s something funky or undeniably classy, vintage pieces add such a wonderful touch to your wardrobe, no matter what your style is. Check out my vintage store here!

Each of these techniques are great ways to evolve and play with your style, without completely changing your wardrobe, breaking the bank, or adding to the fashion industry’s waste.

These are wonderful ways to evolve your style throughout the year, without adding the pressure of having to buy everything all at once.

an exception to the rule

Now, I do want to say that sometimes, it’s ok to completely overhaul your wardrobe. For example, if you haven’t really thought about your style for years, or you’ve outgrown your pieces, or they’re simply out of date and old, those could  be reasons for an overhaul.

But honestly, if you’ve overlooked your style for that amount of time, it’s time you got some extra help!
