4 Tips to transition your style from winter to spring

Spring is finally here in Bozeman, MT!

(Which means it’s been around for awhile most other places)

You're ditching your winter coats and boots for lighter clothes and airy sandals.

But, the new season can bring up some questions about your style and what you should be wearing.

After all, you’ve been wearing the same coat and many layers for the past several months.

It’s time to freshen things up!

how to transition your wardrobe from winter to spring

Here are my top 4 tips for switching your closet from winter to spring.

There's a lot of similar advice on how to transition your closet. That's why I make sure to only share the advice I take myself.

Plus, I gotta give it my own flair, you know?

Here we go!

Tip #1: Be realistic about springtime weather, and have options that make sense

There’s a lot of general style advice out there.

But the reality is, spring looks different depending on where you live!

Most of the springtime style tips I’ve seen are for mild, 70 degree days in California. But not everyone lives in LA.

I’m currently living in Bozeman, MT, and spring weather can be all over the place. One day it will be warm and sunny, the next there will be light rain, and the following it’s snowing.

Because the weather can change on a dime, I need options.

I can’t transition my closet completely to crop tops and shorts. I still need some warmer pieces for when the weather decides to act up.

Pick out the clothes that make the most sense for you and where you live!

#2. Pack away your heavy winter clothes so you can find your warm weather pieces with ease

Ok, I’m sure you’ve heard this before…

But it helps so much!

Winter clothes take up a ton of space. From bulky coats to heavy boots to base layers, they can overwhelm your closet.

To make the transition to spring smooth and simple, pack away your winter clothes.

You can store your winter clothes wherever you like. The idea is to get them out of your way so that your warm-weather clothes can take center stage.

#3. Match your style energy to the spring season

Every season has its own unique energy.

When we tap into these different energies, we become more aligned with the world around us.

Plus, it’s a fun and creative practice!

So, how does this apply to style?

Transitioning your closet to spring isn't about incorporating “spring colors” or “spring patterns”.

It's about bringing the fresh energy of spring into your outfits.

Think of it this way. Spring is all about new beginnings. It’s vibrant, fresh, and full of life. It’s a re-birth of sorts, after the long winter months.

Consider how you can align your style with the energy of spring.

Here are some examples:

  • Trying a new style, pattern, or color that you normally wouldn’t wear

  • Creating new combinations for outfits within your existing wardrobe

  • Incorporating statement pieces in your wardrobe

  • Pairing two bold colors or prints in one outfit

The idea is to try something you never would have tried before.

Something that I’ve been trying this spring is to create color block outfits.

By that I mean wearing a bold, bright shoe paired with a bold, bright purse. Or, a solid bright shirt with a bold pant or skirt.

In the past I’ve leaned towards having only one statement piece in my outfits. But now, I’m experimenting with several statement pieces in one outfit.

And this challenges me to discover new ways to create balance in my looks.

What’s new and fresh for me will be different from what’s new and fresh for you.

So take some time to think about not only what you could try, but also what you’d like to try. What would light you up? What would feel fun? What feels like you?

#4. Get rid of a couple old pieces, and make room in your budget for some new things

This tip goes hand in hand with tip #3.

As you begin to experiment with your style, you’ll likely find that some of your older clothes no longer serve you.

That’s not only ok., it's actually good!

This means that you’re growing in your style and discovering new things that you like even more.

And as you find what you like, make sure that you clear your closet of the things that you no longer like.

This allows you to make room to add things to your closet that you love!

Before going on a shopping spree, I always recommend taking a look at your budget to see how much you can spare. Then you can focus on purchasing pieces based on what you need and what you want most.
